Do you believe in miracles? Well I sure do, especially when God is clearly behind them. Let me tell you a short story. About five years ago I came home from work one evening. As I checked the caller ID, I saw that someone from Kentucky had called during the day, but hadn’t left a message. I returned the call anyway. I’m not sure I’d ever done that before, nor have I done it since. If they don’t leave a message, I assume their call wasn’t that important, so why bother?

The man at the other end of the phone line quickly informed me he had not called me and had no idea why I was calling him! “But your name is on my Caller ID,” I insisted. He still denied calling my home. We never did get to the bottom of that great mystery, but to make a long story short, I asked him a few questions and discovered that he happened to be a Christian involved in the telecommunications industry. Out of curiosity, I pressed him for more information and, as they say, “the rest is history.”

What I discovered through that phone call was that Broadwing Communications, a long distance company in Houston, would actually pay us a commission for every new customer we signed up. And they were very interested in hiring us to work for them!

So, as hard as it is to believe, that wrong number – or RIGHT number if looked at from God’s perspective -- launched Blessed Hope Communications! We believed most Christians prefer doing business with other Christians (all things being equal), so with that thought in mind, we started our company with great expectations, but having no real idea of the potential this business would provide.

Lifeline, our Christian competitor that has been around for more than ten years. Lifeline has done a lot of good things for the Christian community, but they have done it by charging high rates, monthly fees, and by billing their customers in one-minute billing increments for years. They will donate 10% of your phone bill to your favorite ministry, but it’s coming out of your pocket many times over! Why pay 6.9 cents a minute so they can give 10% to your ministry of choice? Why not choose Blessed Hope as your long distance provider, cut your bill by 30% to 60% (depending on your current plan), and then give that 30% to 60% in savings back to your ministry instead? The Bible calls that being a good steward. Lifeline has also been using MCI/WorldCom as their underlying long distance for many years and MCI is a company to stay away from because of the types of things they support. Just recently, many companies have started offering “unlimited long distance,” which usually turns out to be a real money-losing proposition. One company claims to have unlimited long distance for $49.95, but when the time the bill arrives, it can be $83.00! How many people spend $83.00 a month on phone service in the age of cell phones and e-mail? In reality? About 3% of the general public. “Unlimited long distance” sounds good, but it’s just not a great deal for the average American. A telephone company cannot make money giving their service away for free like this. What they’re trying to do is build a base of customers first before they raise the rates later. And if you are a large long distance user and you use too much phone time, you might find yourself getting a letter in the mail along with a disconnect notice. Remember what your mother told you. If it sounds too good to be true . . . . . . . it probably is.

I believe the average Christian would love to find a really good Christian-owned company, who offers them a good deal, and then just stick with them.
